His school was very simple: the need to work to survive. He developed his talent to disassemble parts of old abarcas and copy them with new materials. EMILIO, THE SHEARER: Almost all productive activities carried out around with work animals disappeared a few years ago, when the mechanization of farming took away from everyday use donkeys, mules, males, mares or other horses. THE HONE: Sylvain Cuminetti is the heir of that Italian street vendor who discovered this "black gold" of Ariège; continuation of an old family tradition, today is the last French producer of natural sharpening stones. SOSA SOAP: Within the economy of self-sufficiency in rural areas, tallow and animal fats of lower quality were kept in containers in order to be utilized in the development of hard soaps. ROOFS OF STRAW: ”Bordas”are great buildings scattered in Pyrenean valleys that are used to keep livestock and to store the grass. Until recent decades, these buildings were covered with rye straw grown in the valley itself, because it has a great ability to isolate the inside of the low temperatures outside. With three former sogueros we have recovered this traditional process of making a rope. CINCHAS: In some mountain villages the horses are used yet for transportation by narrow, winding trails. To properly secure the load, a tack is needed to rig the set against the body of the animal without being harmful to the skin: the strap or paddle, which was woven with wool, hemp and horse hair. In the pre-Pyrenean village of Areu neighbors have restored the old hydraulic saw, which leverages the power of the diverted river water to cut the boards. TOSCA STONE: Due to excessive load overloading the fireplace meant for the roof, the material used was a very light weight stone called tosca o toba. Rebuilt in 1952, shows how the movement of the giant hammer is used to stretch and shape the iron. THE LOOM OF TIRO: In his artisan workshop of Trist, Marie Noële Vacher has been devoted for some years to recover this traditional art for which a special loom called "de tiro" or "de lazo" is required. Felix Quintana is one of those last trilleros who still continue to manufacture these tools but are currently used as ornamental objects. ESPARTEÑAS: “esparto” is a plant that arises spontaneously in arid areas. The inhabitants of the richest counties in this fibrous shrub used it to make their own shoes. ALMEZ’S PALMS: To get good palms to participate in the Palm Sunday procession, with great skill and care, Casimir Brescó does curls, shells and all kinds of things with chips that produce the blade cuts on a stick of hackberry or litonero.
