2014 - LOST ILLUSIONS is a series of twelve episodes of one hour long which tells the story of those Spaniards who went into exile, participated in the resistance against the Germans, and many of them, converted on maquis or guerrillas, crossed the Pyrenees with the idea of returning to Spain the Republic and the democracy. • Director: EUGENIO MONESMA • Production: PYRENE P.V. Two months earlier, about 500,000 Spaniards retreating crossed the Pyrenean frontier for help and protection. The remnants of a defeated army and the expatriates started this way a painful journey, a path never glimpsed by those who stood firm their illusions of defend the political regime established by popular decision: the Republic. The French Government was faced with this situation improvising closed camps by barbed wire and large venues in isolated areas near the frontier in order to intern those who were not repatriated. After the Civil War, a new period began in Spain under an authoritarian regime of the winners, commanded by Franco, in which prevailed scarcity and hunger. Thousands of Spaniards were taken as prisoners by the Germans and deported to the death camps. In France the resistance continued. Spanish political parties managed to rebuild itself in the "free zone" where the exiled Republicans had been held by the Vichy government in concentration camps. There were improvised training schools to the preparation of the maquis. These training schools also served to maintain and stoke the enthusiasm for returning to Spain, in order to implement the Republican regime that had been taken from them by Franco. After the war in Spain, prisons and jails were saturated to the point that other areas had to be improvised. The most feared situations in prisons were the famous "bags" and "rides" of the prisoners to an uncertain fate, fate that was sensed by the rest of the prisoners in their silence. Given this historical context of repression in Spain and sponsored by the Communist Party, from the summer of 1941 were  adopted in France the political tenets of National Union,  and the magazine "Reconquest of Spain", a spokesman for the new organization appeared. The Allied landing took place on June 6th, 1944 on the shores of Normandy. In France the illusions of the Spaniards get bigger, encouraged by the Allies themselves, to end the dictatorial remaining stronghold in the Iberian Peninsula, and prepared the  "Operation Reconquest of Spain" in order to start a general uprising of the country. The October 19th, 1944 the 204 Division, commanded by Colonel Vicente López Tovar, began the invasion of the Aran Valley. With the defeat of the Nazi Germany, the Spanish guerrillas began to lost their illusions. Unable to invade Spain, the National Union changes the strategy and starts infiltration tactics. The period between years 1945-1947 marked the apogee of the armed resistance in Spain. The UN was created as a consequence of the signing of the peace in the world. Over three years of resistance against the Germans in France gave the guerrillas enough experience to move freely during their missions in Spain without being discovered. Distrust, silence and secrecy were some of the best weapons of the guerrillas in order to communicate between them and outwit the enemy. The arrival of guerrillas in rural populations, avoiding Franco's forces scattered around forests and villages, was accompanied by improvised meetings in which the program of National Union was explained. In small groups, the guerrillas entered the peninsula loaded with arms, ammunition, propaganda and even radio and small presses disassembled to help the clandestine fight inside Spain. Franco had no doubt about using all its repressive machinery to prevent the reorganization of the anti-Franco opposition. With the tempting rewards and the pressure of the counterparts, the traitors came to make a dent in the group of guerrillas. This confusing situation between two sides frightened the Spanish population. (CHAPTER 10) Lost Illusions, The Intensity of the struggle

The guerrillas and links are losing their illusions. The tough stance on fighting causes demoralization and makes more difficult the resistance against the Franco regime. General Camilo Alonso Vega, director of the Civil Guard since 1943, intensified and made harder measures to permanently suppress what they called banditry, citing the law on Banditry and Terrorism. Over the years 46, 47 and 48 some of the guerrillas were under intense persecution and subsequent, there were more numerous and final clashes. Meanwhile, the intensity of the repression of the Franco regime sought a solution in getting informers infiltrating between the guerrillas, and they put a price on the head of many guerrillas. The global political started to show the first symptoms of the "Cold War", which contributed to the February 10th, 1948 the French Government reopened  its border and resume its relations with Spain against Spanish exiles. In March of the same year the UN considered Spain beneficiary of the Marshall Plan, which was made to rebuild Europe. The guerrillas, links and suspected peasants were subjected to a court martial and the decision of a military court, having to face sentences of decades in prison, life imprisonment or death penalty. The Cold War contributes to a rightward in Western Europe. On November 4th, 1950 the UN opens the possibility that Franco's Spain will be admitted in international organizations. There were a series of military and economic agreements between Spain and the United States in 1953. Because of this puppet role of the great powers that they have to play, the guerrillas feel betrayed and their illusions on set up a democratic regime again in Spain are frustrated. This alliance finally ended with a historical, censored and secret period, known in Spain in the forties as "the time of the maquis". For more information about this format
